A Mother’s Gift

Happy Mother’s Day weekend! This Mother’s Day is going to look a lot different to most of us. Being a Mother should mean getting together with our children, receiving and giving those big ole bear hugs…………NOT social distancing! I don’t know about you, but I’m more than ready to be able to wrap my arms around my children and grandchildren.

Children are gifts

This verse in Psalms spoke to me this morning. Reminding me that God has given me so much to be thankful for throughout my life. Yes even now, I can be thankful that they are all healthy. Becoming a mother was a gift from God I am forever thankful for. He gave them to me not only for my joy but for his as well, by me teaching them to follow him.

Giving a gift you have received back to the giver is considered socially incorrect. But God has blessed us with the gift of a child so we can indeed give them back to him. Many of us, through the ceremony of baptism, gave our children back to God. But he also wants us to give them back to him in our hearts too.

Returned Gifts

Anyone who knows me can tell you I love my children dearly and would do anything for them humanly possible. I’m sure you feel the same way about yours. But we have to remember God gave them to us for only as long as we are walking this earthly journey. It is our responsibility to teach them about him and his love for us, (Deuteronomy 11:18-21).

By giving  my children back to God in my heart means I am telling God I trust him with them more than I trust myself. As a mother, that’s not an easy thing to do. As a mother, we think we can protect and care best for them. As a mother, we feel as if there can be no greater love than what we have for our children. God loved us so much that he gave his son for us, (John 3:16).  So, as a mother, we know His love is so much greater than ours could ever be. Who better to care for our children than the one who created them and gifted them to us?

Motherly Love

I realized when I had my children, that each was a gift far too precious for me to receive and care for by myself. Therefore by giving them back to him, God not only has blessed me, but he has also blessed them. They both know, love and serve him. Not only have they put their faith and trust in their Heavenly Father, they have, and continue to, teach their children the value of that faith and trust.

Having grandchildren who know, love and serve God is my reward for giving back the gift of my children. The New International Version of this verse says, “children are a heritage from the Lord”. I taught my children to love Jesus. They have taught their children to love him. This is by far the greatest heritage I could ever give them.

If you haven’t already, give your children to God. Not only through the ceremony of baptism, but in your heart as well. He shall walk beside them while on this earthly journey. Most importantly he shall also with them for all of eternity.

God bless you and Happy Mother’s Day.
